Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise and 2012 Fire Awareness Awards
Congratulations to Slamed Creations on receiving two awards and a grant in the 2012 Fire Awareness Awards for their Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise. Troy and Stacey Kinsmore and Wendy Bennett are the worthy recipients of the Community Recovery Award, the RACV Award for Excellence and the Special Incentive Grant for their commitment to the Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise. These awards are a great tribute to the inaugural Remembrance Cruise held in February this year which was a great success.
The next Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise will be held on Saturday 2 February 2013. This unique fundraising event will begin at 4.00pm at the Lilydale Industrial Estate Car Park, Beresford Road, Lilydale. The cars will then set off for a cruise through some of the towns affected by the Black Saturday Bushfires. The cars will then be on display at Healesville Railway precinct. Each year, over 6 million Australians generously volunteer over 730 million hours of unpaid work worth an estimated $16 billion.
I was pleased to be able to present National Volunteer Award certificates to some very worthy local recipients recently.
Lis Guldager-Nielsen from Lilydale Community Information Centre along with Colin Matheson and Shaun Caulfield from Lilydale SES have given many hours of their time and energy over a number of years to our local community.
Melba Support Services
This week I visited Melba Support Services with my colleague Senator Mitch Fifield, the Shadow Minister for Disabilities, Carers and the Voluntary Sector.
As strong supporters of the NDIS, it was great to see the wonderful work Melba do. We had the opportunity to make purchases from ‘the Able Bake House’ which produces a fantastic range of gourmet cookies and slices. By purchasing products from ‘the Able Bake House’ you are helping to build a successful community business, providing them with an opportunity to contribute positively and actively within the local business community.
To purchase a Christmas gift hamper, contact Kerry Kift, Project Manager 0413 719 474.
2012 Yarra Ranges Relay for Life
Participating in this year’s Yarra Ranges Relay for Life was a wonderful experience and I was able to see first hand the hard work and dedication that goes into this community event. 44 teams relayed for 18 hours and raised a combined $93,488.70 for the Cancer Council. Congratulations to each and every participant and well done again to the organizing committee chaired by Megan Fleming.
It was fantastic to meet up again with 7 year old Zachary Wall and his Mum Jeanette in my Canberra office. Zachary was chosen as one of 100 'Kids in House' – kids with type 1 diabetes – who came to Canberra to tell their story and highlight the need for more research to secure a cure in the future. As you can see, I let him have the run of the office!
A Coalition government will provide $35 million to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes.
