Statement from Tony Smith MP

I have this evening advised the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, that I cannot vote for Labor’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme.

Accordingly, I have resigned my position as a Shadow Minister.

Finalising Emissions Trading Scheme legislation before knowing what action the rest of the world is taking will damage our economy and do nothing to reduce global emissions.

I reject assertions that refusal to support Labor’s scheme equals refusal to support action on climate change. You can be fully committed to effectively combating climate change without supporting this ETS at this time.

The Parliament is only finalising the legislation now to cater for Mr Rudd’s ego.

Whilst not supporting my Leader’s decision is difficult, not supporting the interests of my electorate is impossible.
