Retirement of Phil Bowen

The President of the Senate, Senator the Hon Stephen Parry, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon Tony Smith MP, announced on 13 February 2017 that Mr Phil Bowen, the inaugural Parliamentary Budget Officer, is retiring from the position when his term ends on 22 July 2017.

The Presiding Officers wish to take this opportunity to thank Phil Bowen for his service as Parliamentary Budget Officer. His appointment to the role in 2012 followed a long and distinguished public service career, including time spent working at the then Civil Aviation Authority and the Department of Finance. He was awarded the Australian Public Service Medal in 2006.

Mr Bowen has done an outstanding job in establishing and leading the Parliamentary Budget Office for 5 years, at all times working with professionalism and impartiality in the best traditions of the Australian Parliamentary Service. The PBO’s rigorous, independent modelling and analysis has been of great assistance to members of both Houses of the Parliament.

The Presiding Officers gratefully acknowledge that Mr Bowen remained in the role for longer than he originally intended, continuing to provide a great service to members and senators with the costing of policy proposals in the lead-up to the last election.

The Presiding Officers wish Phil and his family all the very best for his retirement.

The next Parliamentary Budget Officer, Ms Jenny Wilkinson, will commence in the role on Monday 24 July 2017.
