The President of the Senate, Senator the Hon Stephen Parry, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon Tony Smith MP, have announced that the records of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the conduct of the Honourable Lionel Keith Murphy will, as of 26 September 2016, be released from the exclusive possession of the Presiding Officers under the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (Repeal) Act 1986.
The records will now need to be reviewed and the Presiding Officers have authorised the Clerks of the Senate and the House of Representatives to access the Commission records for the purposes of providing advice to assist in responding to future requests for access to the records. This initial examination of the records cannot proceed until after 25 September 2016.
As there is a considerable volume of material, the task of reviewing, advising and determining appropriate arrangements for access to the records will take some time. The Presiding Officers will make known their decision on wider access to records of the Commission in due course.
The Presiding Officers have also decided that the records of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry will be located securely at Parliament House whilst the review takes place.
